[Native Gardening] Transplanting small paw paw tree

 

A friend gave me a sapling paw paw tree last year. He dug it from his yard and brought it over and helped me plant it. Unfortunately, it did not survive. I told the friend and he said he will try again, dig down and try to sever the root that connects it to the mother tree (it is a colonizing species) wait until next spring and then dig it up for me.
Does anyone have experience transplanting paw paw? Is this the right way to do it?
