The best way to feed the birds is to plant native plants. My yard is filled with them and the birds love it. I do not provide any artificial feeding stations for them.
As far as loving sunflowers, I would suggest researching for sunflowers that are native to Texas rather than attempting to plant ones from a commercial bird feed mixture.
