Both are Eupatoriums...the first one is purpureum, the woodland Joe Pye Weed which tends to be shorter when in heavy shade or the seed germinated late last year so its shorter now but will be taller next year. The second is rugosum which is the very common White Snakeroot in our woodlands
We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.

Can anyone identify either of these for me? They showed up in my garden, unbidden and unannounced, and I'm trying to figure out how to respond.
The fuzzy purple one is about a foot high. It looks eupatorium-ish to me--in fact, until it bloomed instead of growing taller, I thought my Joe Pye weed was spreading.
The fuzzy white one is about five feet tall; a caveat, though, is that everything in this bed seems to grow taller than specs. (I may dig my own toes into that soil. ;-)
