Don is correct, it is indeed a Smartweed and as Don pointed out, there are both natives and non native Smartweeds but the vast majority of the natives grow in wetlands so my guess would be that yours is a non native one. The genus is Polygonum of which there are several dozen species, are not always easy to distingush one from the other

Can anyone identify this? It's growing about six feet tall in my front garden, and to my sorrow, once again my identification skills are not up for the job. Pretty, but should I trust it?
