I don't felt like others on this list. I don't make an entire scene using a felting technique.
 
I use open embroidery designs. I outline the embroidery design template on washaway (I use two pieces of washaway in opposite directions) and then felt on the washaway, exactly where I want the colors and hues to be, then embroider over the felted areas. I wash the washaway off and with invisible thread attach it to the garment or what ever I have designed it for. Sometimes I add some stitches to the felted area to make sure it goes through the washing machine cycle. 
 
My way of using the felting machine. I'm not much of an artist, and this method works for me.
This way I can add the design to purchased and some creatively made clothing.
