Tonya:
My very first machine was a Janome 725 and I also threw out my first experiments. But I kept trying different things and now I'm hooked to all things wool and felting. Keep trying. I found that craft felt can disintegrate under the needle action, that's why I use flannel. It is stable enough to take any amount of needle action, disappears completely, doesn't leave holes or can be used as a background, if it is nice enough. Also, try tulle netting in two layers. You can felt on this, both sides, and it also acts as a "skeleton" for your felting. You can make up sheets of it and then cut out applique shapes with fine scissors to get small floral or leaf shapes. I definitely suggest ordering some smaller sized needles from our list Mom Denise Spanos from her website at the following link:http://www.tryourdesigns.com/CutFeltingNeedles1.htm.
I hope this helps,
