hi heather... dont know if janome or store put a damaged unit on the machine to sell..or it was just a fluke but BOTH units being defective makes me wonder....
i called the store again and spoke to the owner this time. he said he was supposed to get the machine shipped back with needle unit installed so he could check it out.. but when i explained that im 64, dont drive or take public transportation out of state he said he would allow me to just ship the unit to him to inspect and if needles werent broken (which they are not) he would try to get janome to replace for me ..have my fingers crossed!
then i took the replaceable unit to my doctors appt and asked my doctor to losen the needle.. he laughed but did it for me :-) starting to feel a little better now. dispite the scary news from doctor

Also, I am assuming the glued piece is actually a return that was repackaged, (not defective) which is why janome wants you to contact where you purchased the machine...it is their responsibility, since they allowed the return of a modified machine and then resold it to you...at least that's what I'm thinking.
Life is too short to be frustrated. This is supposed to be fun!

UPDATE:
janome acknowledges unit is defective but will NOT replace. referred me back to company i purchased machine from..they promised to "get back to me but did not" so will call them again today.
to make matters worse the 2nd needle unit (this one for replaceable needles) is also defective! one needle is about 2-3 mm longer than the other 4 and the screwed so tight ive not been able to unscrew. will try wd40 as denise suggested or try to find a man able to unscrew.. am at my wits end and very discouraged.
