Oh boy, something I know about. I felt lots of old wool sweaters for my purses I make. Do not cut apart before you felt them or they could unravel. I throw 3/4/5 in the machine together, add hot water, set my kitchen timer so that I can check it before it spins/rinses. I clean out any wool that has come off before it goes down the washer drain. Usually they take at least 2 washings if not 3. I just keep checking their progress, and cleaning out the wool. Then I dry them in the dryer, that will felt them a little more so keep that in mind. I have felted some too much and makes them hard to sew then.

I have some old worn out sweaters of sentimental value that I am thinking of
fulling/felting in the washing machine. Do I need to take them apart first
or can I felt them as is and then cut out as needed?
