Basically yes Barbara it is the carrier and you can get such diverse results depending on what base fabric you use.
Ive had great results from thin turban cotton fabric and scrim too, but equally silk and lace/netting will give you the lovely handle you may want.
Really its trial and error till you find what 'hand' you like yourself. Its very useful to simply play with the embellisher on all sorts of fabrics and amass samples so you learn as you go. And no surprise they wont share their secrets if they are selling the things as a business lol
Going to workshops generally mean makers share their info on them and theres some great books now, so maybe loan them from a library and soak up the info.
Sample lots of things in small pieces and you may even like to try simply cross hatching threads onto water soluble fabrics.........but you have to but them new cos they wash away after use lolol You can make it up on water soluble then remove that and embellish it further in places or all over, adding in other yarns/wool.
Good luck. Am sure it will all fall into place for you all of a sudden! Enjoy :)
