Re: [machine_needle_felting] good morning from the UK

Hi Annie

My name is Liz and I too am a Brit.  I have seen the sign which says it is the centre of UK,  so I have a rough idea of where you are.  I am a probably a couple of hours further south than you - it hasnt snowed here, but it is very very cold, was -10C last night.

I bought most of my rovings from Wingham Wool Works, out in the Yorkshire countryside near to Rotherham.

I too am disabled after an accident, and my hands are rather weak.  We drove over to Rotherham, it is not that far from here, perhaps  90 minutes.   I can walk, although not great distances, and I just went in and out of the various sheds - this is not a posh fancy little shop, it is a series of sheds, and is open on Sunday and Monday only.  They do mail order as well.

I have only done small projects up to know, some nice brooches and bookmarky things.  I cant concentrate for long due to medication, so tend to choose small projects

Nice to meet another Brit

Liz in UK

good morning from a very cold snow scapped UK
we have just had the coldest night since 1997 but do  I care ,, no way  this just means i do not need to go out so have more time  to play.
My name is Ann and i live near the center of the  UK and needle  felting  and embellishers  are  just being seen as an art form  so  no tutors or workshops  or even felting events. Infact its quite hard to get  roveing unless you go onto the  web. This  means that if you want to learn how to do things  then its mainly trial and effort.

Most of my wool roving i aquired from thrift shops  when they sell teh thick non twisted  woolen scarves, this  gives me something to do on an evening  unravelling and removeing the thin cotton thred that holds it all togewther and hten  useing two dog grooming brushes  i  card it'
I have overcome the one problem of  actually storeing the wool and stiull being able to see what  colores ihave by  asking and getting  empty plastic sweet jars form the local  sweet shop. these normally get thrown out  so  the owner is more than happy to re cycle them as long as i buy a few sweets  from the shop.... ( nice excuse so treat myself)
I have  created a small dog  and  also some landscape pictures
and  also  some of the cobweb scarves  again  self taught but  have been more than happy with the results.
I had  one problem  with the embellishing the roving onto the organza in the fact it kept moveing  when the downdraft  hit the lighter sections of the  roving but  then found a way to hold everything in place by  the simple  idea of  placeing some Saran wrap / cling film  over the top  of the are to be worked on. the  roving is not meshed  to the  film and  the  job is made so much easier.

My thumb joints  are painfull  with arthritus  so wet felting by hand  was again a bit hard to do,  till  i spotted a piece about useing an orbital sander to do the  vibrational  job of meshing the  fibres together.
I had a go at this and it worked  out so easy and fast too.
oh Yes   must explain i have a tendencey to cheat so the organza / silk  or chiffon scarves are allready made and just need embellishing  i get them from the thrift shops along with any old woolen jumper that take my eye,
i have an elderly hubby,  we are both disabled  but  we manage to enjoy  life and do  weird and unexpected things like taking  daughters  for a picnic after a nice walk with the dogs ( us in electric wheelchairs,) the picnic  was on a car park and i actually cooked up  fried potaotoes (UK chips) and  beefbugers by the side of the cars..
memories are made of things like this and i love to  make them for my daughters.
Ok  thats the intro done    annie in the UK
