Re: [Native Gardening] identifying yew

Good question and one that is difficult at best to answer as both the Japanese Yew and the native Canadian Yew look very similar in both form and habit. There is a distinct difference in Bud Scales but to a novice with limited botany skills it is not likely they will be able to tell the difference. My suggestion would be to take a cutting of 2 years worth of growth and consult with your local university extension service or bring it to your local college who has a botany or horticulture program where a adviser can make a positive ID for you

Is there an easy way to distinguish a native yew (Taxus Canadensis) from non-natives? I have several yews in my backyard, but I haven't been able to work out how to identify them.

Thanks.
