[Native Gardening] Re: Plant ID help- groundcover

 

I believe it's Viola sororia, unless it has leafy stems, which are not apparent from the photo. It will be more apparent when it blooms! It loves shady areas.

Viola missouriensis, another look-alike native, would have much more triangular leaves.

I have seen deep purple Viola sororia hybridize with my Viola 'Freckles' - (which is a sororia-type but with white flowers and scattered tiny purple spots (like being airbrushed!)) and we ended up with white sororia-types, light blue and bicolor sororia types, even a few new Freckles! (Freckles seems to be sort of short-lived however. : (
