Re: [Native Gardening] newbie to group, question

Don't buy anything that they can't provide you with the full botanical name as this is the only way you can confirm the proper identification of the plant and if someone can't provide you with the botanical name, chances are they don't even know what they're selling you. Digitalis by the way is NOT native to the US, its a common cottage garden plant from Europe and as April correctly pointed out, most who sell Loosestrifes are probably trying to sell you Lythrum salacaria which is the highly invasive Purple Loosestrife. If they do provide you with a botanical name, you can cross reference it with the USDA website to find out if its native or not to your region

We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.

Hi,
I'm trying to go native with my perennials. I get confused when I see an ad from an individual selling foxglove or other plants. (I try to buy through craigslist to save money). I'm concerned that I'm not getting a native plant but just a cultivar (is that the right word)? Is this something to be concerned about? Someone was selling loosestrife but I read that some species were highly invasive. Is there a way to confirm that I'm planting natives?
Thanks for your help.
Laura
