In Britain jumper means sweater, or it did when we lived there.

I've seen the word "jumper" used frequently here on this list and wondered what it was? To me, a jumper is a kind of heavy dress with no sleeves that you wear over a sweater - I loved them in high school. What is a jumper being referred to here?
